These sources can serve a variety of useful purposes for your research. Browsing resources such as specialized encyclopedias can help you identify interesting topics to research, while providing the background information that will get you started. Handbooks and dictionaries can help clarify unfamiliar terminology, while directories and subject bibliographies can refer you to organizations and resources that offer more detailed information.

Encyclopedias and Dictionaries

Nursing Resource Center
This database is designed to support both the clinical and research needs of nursing students. Search results are organized by practical categories such as Diseases, Assessments, Interventions, and Care Plans, and consist of in-depth essays derived from major nursing reference texts. The database also includes full-text articles from numerous scholarly journals, as well as animated multimedia illustrations of human anatomy and medical conditions.

Find Journal Articles

Search the following databases to locate citations and/or full text of journal articles. In some cases, the database will provide links to the full text of articles. If you see a    button next to an article of interest, click it to determine whether the journal is available in the Geisel Library or in full text via another electronic database. WebBridge will also help you request articles through Interlibrary Loan if they aren't available through our library. If there is no WebBridge button, search for the journal's availability using the Journal Finder. Journals listed as being in "Geisel Library Paper Holdings" are shelved alphabetically by journal title on the Lower Level of the library.

CINAHL
Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) is the premier search tool for scholarly nursing and health care information with some full text from over 1,200 journal titles. Also included within the database are citations to conference proceedings, book chapters, and dissertations.    User Guide (PDF)

Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition
Provides full-text access to 600 scholarly journals focusing on many medical disciplines.

Literature Indexes from the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing
The Virginia Henderson International Nursing Library "provides knowledge resources to help advance nurses as scholars."

MEDLINE
This EBSCO database is a subset of the larger PubMed database. It includes coverage with some full text for over 4,000 international journals in all languages from 1966 to the present. Use Medline for (1) EBSCO's easy to use search interface (2) To pinpoint titles owned by Saint Anselm College or available in full-text in other EBSCO databases. Otherwise, use PubMed as noted below.

PubMed
PubMed is the premier bibliographic database of the National Library of Medicine. It provides access to the full-text of over 400 medical journals. Search PubMed if you need access to 1) very current information 2) full text to journals not owned by the college or available via other full-text databases. Other Subject Resources

Academic Search Premier
A broad index providing abstracts and some full-text for a range of academic areas, including medicine.

LexisNexis Academic
Find articles from medical and health journals by clicking on the Power Search tab, choosing "All Full-Text Medical Journals" from the Select Sources menu, and entering your search terms in the box provided.

PsycINFO
This database from the American Psychological Association supplies indexing and abstracts from 1887 to the present for journals in over 25 languages plus English-language books and book chapters from 1987.    User Guide

TOXLINE
This database from the National Library of Medicine is an "extensive collection of online bibliographic information covering the biochemical, pharmacological, physiological, and toxicological effects of drugs and other chemicals." Coverage is five years ago to the present.

Find Primary Sources

A guide to finding sources, including primary versus secondary, and popular and trade versus scholarly.


Find Books

Search the library catalog to locate books in Geisel Library. Search by keyword (e.g. evidence-based nursing) if you are unsure of the title you are looking for. Nursing books fall within the broad category of medicine and are located on the upper level in the R through RT sections. Search WorldCat to search the collections of libraries worldwide. Find a book in this database, and, if not owned by SAC, you can request it from Interlibrary Loan with one click. Your book(s) will be available for pickup in the library within 7–14 days. Ask for help in using this database at the reference desk, in person, or online at Ask a Librarian.

Healthweb: Nursing
Collaborative effort of the Medical School and School of Nursing at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Links are provided to resources including clinical areas, nursing research, and nursing education.

RN Central
A gathering place on the web for nurses and students. Includes chat, library links, job info, and more.

CDC Wonder
This convenient website offers one-stop access to the Center for Disease Control's vast statistical resources, including the WISQUARS Cause of Death database and data on such topics as cancer, asthma, STDs, and infant mortality.

Health, United States
Government Documents HE 20.7042/6: (print version)
Probably the preeminent government publication for statistics on US health issues, including fertility and mortality, incidence of risk factors, health spending, facilities, and patients. The website offers the latest edition plus archived editions back to 1975.

National Center for Health Statistics
This branch of the Center for Disease Control oversees many of the US federal government's statistical publications on health issues. Check their FastStats page for basic data by topic or the Data Warehouse for tables and datasets at the national and state level.

New Hampshire Health Data Inventory
A good source for state population and community health data.

World Bank Health, Nutrition, and Population Statistics Database
In this online database, use the Data Query system to select the countries, years, and health variables of interest in order to produce downloadable data tables. Also check the MDGs page to obtain data on how well countries are succeeding in meeting the UN's Millennium Development Goals on improving health conditions worldwide.

World Health Organization
The WHO’s statistical information system provides a variety of access points for obtaining health statistics on countries, including downloadable tables from its annual World Health Statistics and quick links to data by topic (such as nutrition and AIDS).
