Library Systems Upgrades

We are excited to announce major upgrades to Library computer systems this summer. With crucial support from the College and the Office of Information Technology, the Library implemented a new central system server in preparation for the new Fall semester. As a result, users will notice dramatically faster interactivity when using Geisel research databases from both on and off campus. In addition, the new hardware will allow more efficient work in the several modules that Library staff use, and will allow us to load many new software enhancements that users will see in the Geisel Catalog.

One very important software upgrade this Fall will come in the form of WebBridge links within Geisel research databases. WebBridge, an advanced OpenURL "link resolver," will help integrate many of our numerous databases by better linking citations and abstracts in one database to available full-text and related resources elsewhere. Library staff are currently configuring and testing this complex software in a number of databases, with hopes for a first implementation in early October. Please stay tuned for more news on WebBridge.

Fall Exhibit

The exhibit showcases the wide variety of resources and services available in the library. From high-level reference help to providing the latest Academy Award-winning DVDs, the library is committed to meeting the information needs of the Saint Anselm College community. This fall we are promoting patron use of personal laptops in the library. With our wireless connection and the ability to print from a non-networked laptop, we expect to see more and more students working electronically throughout the study areas of the library. The faculty are encouraged to collaborate on library exhibits; please contact Betsy Holmes if you would like to participate in a future display.

New Resources

Wireless Network Upgrade

G is here!

Wireless access in Geisel Library has been upgraded to the G standard. B wireless cards will still work, but G-enabled wireless laptops will have faster access.

This means that laptops can take full advantage of the increased bandwidth if they have an IEEE 802.11g-compatible (or G standard) wireless card. Dual and triple standard cards will work also, as long they include support for the G standard (i.e., B/G, A/G, etc.). The G Standard Wireless Card can be purchased at the Saint Anselm Bookstore.

For further details, see Wireless Network Information or, please consult with a librarian at the Geisel Library Reference Desk.

Additionally, the Library is working on addressing any apparent "coverage gaps" in the building. For example, wireless coverage is now much improved in the Creaghe / faculty study room. Please continue to provide us with your suggestions.

Westlaw Campus
Westlaw Campus provides electronic access (both on- and off-campus) to the complete laws and statutes of the federal government and all 50 states, as published in the United States Code Annotated, to all federal regulations published in the Federal Register and the Code of Federal Regulations, and to current and archived articles from hundreds of law reviews and journals. Westlaw Campus also includes the major law reference works American Jurisprudence and American Law Reports, which offer authoritative, encyclopedic discussions of legal issues. Citations in the articles are hot linked, making it very easy for researchers to jump to West's source texts. The "KeyCite" function permits researchers to quickly identify recent cases that have cited earlier cases. The editors at West Group assign scores to cases that give one a sense of how substantial the more recent treatment is, and whether it is positive or negative. Westlaw Campus also includes a law review file that provides the texts of articles published in over 700 legal periodicals. Novice researchers should be able to find relevant materials without much difficulty using the "natural language" search function, but Westlaw Campus also permits highly sophisticated, command-driven searches. The Library expects that Westlaw Campus will prove a valuable resource to researchers in many disciplines.
