The Crier, Saint Anselm College’s student newspaper, won top honors, “first place with special merit,” in the American Scholastic Press Association’s college division press competition for the 2006-2007 academic year.
While the past several years The Crier has consistently placed on top, this year it received a total of 950 points out of a possible 1000 from ASPA judges. Saint Anselm’s student newspaper eclipsed newspapers from schools such as Fordham University, King’s College and Norwich University.
Michael O’Loughlin '07, The Crier’s editor for the 2006-2007 academic year, says the award recognizes the paper’s increased focus on campus news and life, “The Crier updated its look to give the Anselmian community a fresh, clean paper that covered every aspect of life at Saint Anselm.
“I am proud of the hard work of every person on the Crier staff. The support from our advisor, Father Jerome, and the determination of our editors, photographers, writers, and staff makes the Crier a valuable campus resource,” he said.
Lindsay Johnson, of Chicopee, Mass. was TheCrier’s co-editor, and Father Jerome Joseph Day, O.S.B., assistant professor of English, serves as the student newspaper’s faculty advisor.
The ASPA’s annual competition attracts hundreds of student newspapers every year from schools with an enrollment of between 1,700 and 2,500 students.
