The Saint Anselm College SIFE Chapter is hosting a Global Micro-Lending Symposium on Thursday, March 13, at 1 p.m. in the New Hampshire Institute of Politics auditorium.
The symposium will feature Dr. Wali Mondal, dean of the School of Business at National University, as the keynote speaker. Dr. Mondal has extensive experience in micro-lending and has published a book on its success in Bangladesh.
The Saint Anselm SIFE Chapter has made over 100 micro-loans to 30 countries with international business students in the spring 2008 semester. The loans were made through Kiva, a Web site that allows lenders to select the businesses they want to supprt and helps direct the loans to entrepreneurs throughout the developing world.
During the symposium, a panel of Saint Anselm College faculty from the economics and business, philosophy, politics, and theology departments, as well as the Meelia Center for Community Service, will discuss the importance of democratic capitalism as articulated by Pope John Paul II in his encyclical letter Centesimus Annus 1991, encyclical letter on the 100th anniversary of Rerum Novarum.
Students in Free Enterprise, or SIFE, is an international organization of business students who use the ideals of a free market to engage with and improve the world. For additional information about the event, contact Dr. Tom Fitzpatrick or Faye Tresvik in the Economics and Business Department.
