Saint Anselm College is celebrating Shakespeare’s 444th birthday with the 20th annual birthday bash, complete with cake, drama and a sonnet reading marathon. The event will be held on Wednesday, April 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the “piazza” behind Alumni Hall. . It is free and open to the public.
Students, alumni, faculty, staff and area residents will help read all 154 of Shakespeare’s sonnets aloud. Those who read sonnets at the 19 previous celebrations have been invited back for this 20th event. Scenes from Shakespeare’s plays will be performed by the Abbey Players.
Sonnet readings will start at 10 a.m. and break for the following performances: 12:15 p.m., Abbey Players present scenes from “Hamlet” and “The Taming of the Shrew”; 2 p.m., The Duke’s Dawgs present “A Middle-of-the-road Summer Night’s Dream”; and 3 p.m. Abbey Players present Act V, scene v of “Julius Caesar”.
You do not have to read a sonnet in order to be part of the celebration. Take in the beautiful spring scenery and enjoy birthday cake and refreshments as the words of Shakespeare fill the campus
