Father Jonathan DeFelice, O.S.B., president of Saint Anselm College, announced that Kristen C. McGoey '09, a nursing major from Danbury, Conn., has been selected as the Fr. Bernard Holmes, O.S.B., Senior Awardee for the 2008-09 academic year.
This award, which is granted annually, provides full tuition and fees for the winner’s senior year.
"For the past three years I have sat in the Abbey Church and watched other people get the award, and they always have been people I have looked up to and admired," McGoey said. "To be counted among them is an honor."
Through her major and her campus involvement, Kristen McGoey exemplifies the values required of a Holmes award winner. Recipients must demonstrate concern for and assistance to others, potential for leadership, and a love of learning. They also must participate in the life of the college.
McGoey has joined Spring Break Alternative for three years and will lead the trip to Honduras next year. She takes part in the Student Nursing Association and is a Core Team member of Campus Ministry, as well as an orientation leader. She also participates in the Think Big leadership development program and this year her proposal was one of only four selected for action. Her project entails providing students with nutritional information about meals served at Davison Hall. Over the summer, she and her team intend to analyze recipes supplied by Davison and have the nutritional facts ready for the fall semester. She will post them in the dining commons and possibly on the Web.
The Holmes Award was established through the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Davison, in memory of Fr. Bernard Holmes, O.S.B. Mrs. Davison continues to serve on the college’s Board of Trustees.
