David Iglesias, a former U.S. attorney and Navy Reserve commander, will visit Saint Anselm C
ollege to watch and discuss a movie, and to offer a lecture.
On Sunday, Sept. 28, Iglesias will be present for a screening of “A Few Good Men,” in which actor Tom Cruise plays a character based on Iglesias.
The screening will take place Sept. 28 at 8:15 p.m. at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics.
Iglesias will return to campus Monday, Sept. 29, to offer a lecture entitled “When Justice Loses its Way.” The lecture will take place at the NHIOP at 7 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public.
David Iglesias was a defense counsel in a Guantanamo Bay court–martial that inspired the movie “A Few Good Men.” His role as a defense lawyer in a famous military hazing case was the basis for Tom Cruise’s character. Jack Nicholson was also in the movie.
Iglesias also was U.S. Attorney for the District of New Mexico, nominated by President George W. Bush in August 2001. Six years later, he was one of the eight U.S. attorneys involved in controversial firings by the Justice Department. Although the stated reason for the terminations were “performance-related issues,” suspicion existed that political motivations were behind the firings of the “Gonzalez Eight.”
Iglesias testified before the U.S. Congress on the attorney firings, which he details in his new book, “In Justice.”
Both events are cosponsored by the NHIOP Jeanne D. Smith Center for the Study of American Democracy and Citizenship.
