Saint Anselm College is observing National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week this week with events to raise understanding of poverty and offer ways to help.
The week starts Monday, Nov. 17, with a Faces of Poverty Panel from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. in North Lounge, Cushing Center. Residents of greater Manchester area will share experiences of homelessness and living in poverty, followed by a discussion in which guests are urged to ask questions and share reactions. The event is free and open to the public.
On Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 8:30 p.m. in North Lounge, Cushing Center, a Micro-lending Stamp Out Poverty Symposium will be sponsored by Saint Anselm’s SIFE Chapter, a business student organization. Micro-lending is a way for people to lend money directly to small-business entrepreneurs in developing countries.. When the no-interest loans are repaid, the money can be redirected to new recipients. The event is free and open to the public.
Saint Anselm College asks that everyone to bring a $5 donation to the symposium for investment through Kiva, which funnels loans to entrepreneurs in developing countries around the world.
On Wednesday, Nov. 19, Saint Anselm students will sleep out on the quad in make-shift shelters. The Saint Anselm College Hunger and Homelessness Coalition organizes the annual sleep-out to raise awareness about the reality of homelessness. Students will begin to gather on the quad at 9 p.m.
Participants in Girls Inc. will share the experience of being a Saint Anselm College student Thursday, Nov. 20. Each student volunteer will be matched up with a girl whom they will treat to dinner at Davison Hall. The dinner will run from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
