The BoSox Club has established a scholarship in the name of Red Sox Hall of Famer Dominic DiMaggio for a baseball or softball player attending Saint Anselm College. Benjamin Gunn '09, a criminal justice major, has been selected as the annual scholarship’s first recipient.
“We are very grateful to the BoSox Club and Dom DiMaggio for this generous gift, which joins his love of baseball with his dedication to Saint Anselm College,” said Father Jonathan DeFelice, O.S.B., college president. “For years, Mr. DiMaggio was an important member of our board of trustees, and the college has been the fortunate beneficiary of his wisdom, experience and support. With this scholarship, talented scholar-athletes will have an easier time affording a Saint Anselm education. For that, I am profoundly grateful.”
Mr. DiMaggio, a center fielder for the Red Sox from 1940 to 1953, was a Saint Anselm trustee from 1979 to 2006, when he became a trustee emeritus. The $5,000 award is named the Dominic DiMaggio Annual Scholarship.
Gunn, of Vineyard Haven, Mass., is playing short stop in his fourth season with the Saint Anselm Hawks, whose coach Barry Rosen calls him a determined player and a key part of the team. Off the field, Gunn serves as a student mentor and serves on the college’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee.
