Dominic DiMaggio, Red Sox Hall of Famer and trustee emeritus of Saint Anselm College, died Friday in his home in Marion, Mass., surrounded by family. He was 92 years old.
DiMaggio joined Saint Anselm’s board of trustees in 1979, serving with two presidents during periods of expansion and development at the college. He became trustee emeritus in 2006, but remained an important part of the Saint Anselm community.
“It was with great sadness that we learned today of Dom DiMaggio’s death,” said Father Jonathan DeFelice, O.S.B., president of Saint Anselm. “My prayers go out to his widow, Emily, and all his family and friends.”
Dom DiMaggio was a great friend of the college and an important member of our board of trustees. His wisdom and support helped guide Saint Anselm through a time of physical, academic and financial growth, which provided the foundation for what the college is today.”
He will be missed terribly by all of us who knew and loved him.”
Known as "The Little Professor" when he played outfield for the Red Sox, DiMaggio received an honorary degree from the college in 1981. Emily DiMaggio was awarded an honorary degree in 1999. In 2008, the BoSox Club, the official Red Sox fan organization, honored him by establishing an annual scholarship for a Saint Anselm baseball or softball player.
DiMaggio and his wife had a special relationship with the Benedictine community of Saint Anselm Abbey, and Father Jonathan will celebrate his funeral Mass. Arrangements have not yet been announced.
