Francis J. Megan Jr. ’51, a generous benefactor of Saint Anselm College and father of three Saint Anselm alumni, died Thursday, July 23 2009 at the age of 79.
Megan, of Exeter, N.H., was a strong supporter and friend of Saint Anselm. For his extraordinary service to the college, he received an alumni award, the Joseph P. Collins ’34 Meritorious Service Award, in 1999. He was presented with the award for his unusual energy, loyalty, and devotion, which promotes the advancement and standing of the alumni association and the college.
In 2001, in recognition of his generous gift to the Chapel Art Center, the college’s art gallery was named in honor of his wife, Alva deMars Megan. He was also instrumental in advocating, funding, and designing the college's Veterans War Memorial, which was dedicated in June 2001.
Born in Boston, Mass., August 15, 1929, Megan attended Saint Anselm, graduating in 1951 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history. Upon graduation, Megan joined the Marine Corps during the Korean War and served 11 years in active duty and the reserve. He was an entrepreneur with an interest in technology. He leaves behind his wife, Alva, and their nine children.
Megan's funeral mass was celebrated by Fr. Mark Cooper, O.S.B., Thursday, July 30 at Saint Anselm Abbey Church.
