Like many in the metropolitan area, Crowley was affected personally by the September 11 terrorist attacks. One of his firm’s seven locations was in the South Tower of the World Trade Center. He and JR were in Kansas to adopt a newborn baby girl, but JR’s sister and nearly 70 of Crowley’s co-workers lost their lives. When it comes to giving, the Crowleys like to channel their efforts to causes with a personal connection. Several revolve around the events of September 11, 2001.
Crowley lives on the south shore of Long Island, just a short drive from the beach where he takes his daughters. Free time is usually spent in family activities, such as playing Yahtzee with first-grader Mae, or reading If You Give a Mouse a Cookie to three-year-old Annie. He built his daughter’s crib and a dining room table, and recently helped Mae build a birdhouse (which was promptly occupied, he points out). On vacations, he usually tries to get up to the Boston area to visit his family or old friends from college.
By giving consistently to the college, Charles Crowley exemplifies the commitment shown by graduates who believe in the value of their education, according to Patricia Guanci Therrien, director of alumni and annual programs.
“Our alumni lead busy lives and there are so many causes deserving of their attention. It’s amazing how many make the conscious decision to give back to their college, in whatever amount they can. Every contribution has an impact financially, but more importantly it strengthens the spirit of the college. These individuals are making a clear statement that they believe in the Saint Anselm education.”
