Dave Cannon
David Cannon

Hometown: East Greenwich, R.I.
Major: History

In a year or so, David Cannon sees himself teaching history to high school students.

This year, however, he has set other challenges for himself. One of three captains of the men’s hockey team, he will try to match his performance of last season, when he was named to the 2004 ECAC Division III Men’s East Ice Hockey All-Academic Team.

Cannon started playing hockey when he was four and is so dedicated to the sport, he gives up his other athletic love—surfing—once the captains’ practices start in late September. He did manage to ride some hurricane-whipped waves this year, however, just before hockey commenced.

In addition to his work as a defenseman on the ice, Cannon serves as barber to about half the hockey team and cuts the hair of several other students on campus.

The East Greenwich, R.I., resident also is working toward his teaching certificate and completing his major in history. His greatest interest is modern U.S. history, particularly the period between the two World Wars, an era he said he only starting learning about in college.

“I guess I find that period so interesting because I knew nothing about it before,” he says. “In high school, we always stopped at the Great Depression.”

A former volunteer at the Hillsborough County Nursing Home, he also worked as a teacher’s aide in the McKelvie Middle School, in Bedford, N.H., last year. This year, he will student teach at Memorial High School, in Manchester.

“I like working with kids and helping them out,” he says. “It is a great feeling when you can see progress made with a kid as a result of your instruction.”
