Trustee Issues Challenge to Build Scholarships

Richard Bready '65, has made a commitment to Saint Anselm students that could transform the future of scholarship aid. The college trustee and CEO of Nortek, Inc., of Providence, R.I., has pledged to match—dollar for dollar, up to $250,000—any new or increased gifts designated for annual scholarships.

"The Bready Challenge will take us through June 2004, and when we reach the goal, our students will enjoy a half-million dollars in additional scholarship aid," said Fr. Jonathan DeFelice, O.S.B., president of the college. "This will go a long way in making a Saint Anselm education possible for many academically qualified and deserving students who otherwise could not afford to attend. I want to personally thank Richard Bready for his commitment to the Annual Fund and for challenging each one of us to make a meaningful difference in the lives of students."

Bready's $250,000 challenge grant, the first of its kind for the college, would become the single largest gift to the Annual Fund, if other alumni and friends share his enthusiasm and faith in a Saint Anselm education.

"Richard Bready's thoughtfulness and generosity in creating this challenge is a call to action for all alumni, parents and friends," added James Flanagan, vice president for college advancement. "With approximately 85 percent of Saint Anselm students receiving some type of financial assistance, the impact of our collective effort can be far reaching."

For more specific information about how the "Bready Challenge" could match your annual fund gift, contact Doug Kruse, director of development, at (603) 641-7201. Alumni and friends will be learning more about this initiative in a mailing this fall.

Trustee Richard Bready '65, and his wife Cheryl made history at Saint Anselm College with their announcement to fund the college's first endowed faculty chair. The Bready's were hosting an alumni reception at their Newport, R.I., home in August when they informed Fr. Jonathan of their $1 million commitment to academics. The unexpected announcement drew enthusiastic applause from the 150 alumni and friends on hand.

Endowed faculty chairs are among the top priorities in the Campaign for Saint Anselm College; they support teaching, research, and development opportunities in specific disciplines. They also honor accomplished faculty on campus and allow the college to attract distinguished visiting scholars. Details of the Bready gift were still being determined as of press time.
