The second annual Alumni Awards Dinner featured the winners of the college's Alumni Association Awards for 2002. These awards honor outstanding alumni, parents, and friends whose personal and professional achievements enhance their communities and their professions. The following honorees also serve as examples of Saint Anselm's mission to graduate men and women who lead creative and generous lives.
Joseph P. Collins Meritorious Service Award
Thomas J. Igo received the Joseph P. Collins Meritorious Service Award. As a Golden Anselmian and member of the class of 1951, his outstanding efforts volunteering for and promoting the college in the New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Florida areas is recognized and his dedication rewarded.
Alumni Award of Merit
John J. McCann III received the Alumni Award of Merit for his service to his community, excellence in his profession, and interest in his fellow man. Since his graduation in 1972, he has held positions as chairman, president, and CEO of numerous multi-national companies. He still finds time to actively participate with the Providence Preservation Society, Alumni Association, and President's Society Council.
Catholic Leadership Award
Fr. Vincent Michael O'Connor received the Catholic Leadership Award as a minister dedicated to the spiritual needs of his community. He graduated from Saint Anselm College in 1944, was ordained in 1948, and has since devoted his life in ministry for the armed forces, veterans, the elderly, and rehabilitational services. He also serves as a clergyman for St. Catherine's Parish in Springfield, Mass.
Young Alumni Service Award
Karen Last earned the Young Alumni Service Award for her selfless concern for the sick and dying. A 1996 graduate of the nursing program, she has traveled around the world to serve and care for those in need. In 1998, she founded the Starfish Foundation, which benefits disadvantaged children living with terminal illnesses in the New England and New York areas.
Justice Award
Ernest C. Yerrington was awarded the Justice Award, which is given to an individual who has made significant contributions in the field of law enforcement. Since graduating in 1983, he has been a special agent for the U. S. Customs Department, and since his return to New Hampshire in 1991, he has been stationed in Concord as a special agent for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. He continues to serve Saint Anselm students through yearly internships, as a member of the Alumni Council and president of the Anselmian Athletic Club.
