Albert F. Grenert, 83, formerly of Manchester, died on August 9, 2002, in Rockport, Maine following a long illness. Grenert was a 22-year Saint Anselm basketball coach, and was elected as a charter member of the Saint Anselm Hall of Fame in 1980.
Grenert was born in Holyoke, Mass., on July 8, 1919, the son of Albert and Sarah (Benoit) Grenert. He moved to Manchester in 1949 and resided there until last year, when he moved to Rockland, Maine.
Grenert, a 1949 graduate from New York University and veteran of World War II, was inducted into the New York University Hall of Fame at the Downtown Athletic Club in Manhattan and elected to the Queen City Hall of Fame in Manchester. He also often worked as the color man with Boston Celtics announcer Johnny Most, his old friend and college basketball rival.
His family includes his wife of 57 years, Iris (Matthews) Grenert; five sons, Geoffe, Greg, Mark, Scott, and Albert Jr. Grenert; two daughters, Lou (Donna) Guertin and Bert (Lisa) Boucher; and 22 grandchildren.
