What was your favorite class?
Tom—My colloquium. I was a politics major and I focused on community policing. My professor didn’t like my topic, but I did it anyway, and got an A.
What was your favorite meal?
Tom—There were none. During my sophomore year they introduced brunches. We used to play Frisbee with the pancakes. I used to look forward to getting crisp toast when I went home.
Janet—None. There was no fresh fruit and no salad bar.
How much did you spend on books each semester?
Tom—around $150.
Janet—around $100.
Where did you typically study?
Tom—I never studied in the dorms. I always studied in the library—it was the only place to go for research—or downstairs in the church.
Janet—I studied in the library most of the time.
Why did you choose to attend Saint Anselm College?
Tom—I wanted a small Catholic college. I applied to Saint Anselm and Holy Cross. They (Holy Cross) made the mistake of offering me a partial scholarship to play football. My parents didn’t want me playing football, so I came to Saint Anselm.
Janet—I came here for the nursing program. I always wanted to be a nurse. My parents heard about the nursing program and I fell in love with the campus when I visited.
Where did you go off campus to hang out with friends?
Tom—We went to the Haruguri Club and the Verani Restaurant to play shuffleboard.
Janet—We went to friends’ apartments off campus.
What is the last concert you attended?
Tom—During college concerts on campus included Livingston Taylor, Jethro Tull, and the Eagles.
Tom and Janet—Norah Jones last summer.
What is your favorite Saint Anselm memory?
Tom—I gave Janet a diamond in my senior year. I gave it to Fr. Jonathan, who was dean of students, to keep safe in the monastery. She was very surprised.
Janet—Coming back to school after Christmas or summer break and seeing all your friends again. It was great to see everyone.
Who was your most inspirational professor?
Tom—Frank Mason, a history professor. He made me feel that if I didn’t do well, I let him down.
Janet—Mary Bruton and Ruth Bagley, nursing professors.
What is the biggest difference between you and your children?
Tom—Our children are much smarter than we were. They are more prepared for life than we were.
Janet—They are much more worldly—they challenge us. I didn’t know how much fun it would be to have adult children.
What is your favorite spot on campus?
Tom—The church/chapel, that is the signature spot on campus.
Janet—The quad, it is the center of activity. A lot went on in the quad.
