John Barry Honored with his own Award
Alumni Association President George Kelly ’64 called John Barry a “model alumnus and an outstanding friend of the college” at Reunion 2005. Barry was on hand for the 65th anniversary of his graduation in 1940.
“Except for the past few years, I’ve been back to campus for almost every reunion since 1940,” says Barry, who began as a student during the Great Depression. The class of 1940 numbered 40, and Barry recalls “the class was all men, and we did everything: eat, sleep, study and worship, in just one building.”
After returning from World War II where he earned a bronze star serving as a medic in France and Germany, Barry became one of the college’s most loyal supporters and enthusiastic cheerleaders.
Over the past six decades Barry has recruited students, encouraged other alumni to become more involved with their alma mater, and supported the college with his contributions and time. He is former president of the Alumni Association and Golden Anselmians, and has served on just about every alumni committee and board. He follows the college’s athletic teams, especially football, has created book funds for the library and established scholarship funds for students. In 2001 the Alumni Council created an award in his name, the John F. Barry ’40 Spirit of Saint Anselm Award, and in 1990 he received the college’s Joseph P. Collins Meritorious Service Award.
What Barry didn’t know, as he drove to campus for Reunion 2005, was that he was also part of the program. In a surprise announcement by Kelly, Barry was recognized for his enthusiastic support of the college and presented with the award, created in his name, the John F. Barry Spirit of Saint Anselm College Award. The award has previously been given to four alumni, but this time it was Barry’s turn.
“Our community has truly been blessed by your loyalty, hard work, good humor and many years of friendship. On behalf of all Saint Anselm College alumni, I want you to know that you have our sincere and heartfelt gratitude for everything you have done,” said Kelly in his presentation of the award to Barry.
“I didn’t expect it at all,” said Barry. “I was so surprised I couldn’t think of anything to say.”
