Saint Anselm Grads Pursue Justice and a Safer Society
By Bob Lindquist

Benjamin Franklin said, “nothing in life is certain except death and taxes.” If Franklin were alive today he might have added crime to his list of certainties. Not a day goes by when terrorist threats, gang  violence, corporate scandals or some other major crime isn’t making headline news.

Whenever a significant crime unfolds in the United States, chances are Elaine Rizzo there is a Saint Anselm College graduate positioned to play a role in its resolution.

Terrorism and security specialist Kelly McCann ’80, (Portraits, Spring/Summer 2002) has been in high demand with the growing threat of terrorism. The former U.S. Marine has been providing counter terrorism and security assistance to corporate, government, and military clients for a decade and serves as a security analyst for CNN. Jim McDonnell ’81, a 23-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department, has seen his share of gang violence and high profile cases, including the O.J. Simpson trial and 1992 Los Angeles riots. Robyn Monteiro ’98, has helped to protect American and foreign diplomats in the United States and South America. These alumni and many others in law enforcement, government agencies, private security firms, and public corporations are not only protecting individual citizens, they are part of the foundation of justice and freedom.

Offering one of the pioneer criminal justice programs in the northeast, the college has been a major source of justice seekers since 1958. The birth of the program, according to Professor Thomas Hammond, came when Manchester Police Chief Francis McGranahan, called the college looking to use the parking lots for defensive driving instruction. That was the start of a long relationship. The college began offering additional training programs and classes for police officers. The demand was high, and the program grew to include courses in psychology, sociology, and history.
