“You get a great foundation from books and professors, but it’s not the whole story.”
The words of new grad Andrew Curran sum up the reasons why so many Saint Anselm College students willingly make their schedules even busier by signing on to internships. Ironically, it is the busiest students, whose days are filled with classes, studying, volunteer service, extracurricular activities, and jobs, who tend to seek internship opportunities. Why? They’re motivated to succeed, and they realize that mentored on-the-job experience offers unique benefits. An internship is a chance to try out a career choice; focus graduate school plans; and form relationships that can lead to employment. In a tough job market, many see it as an investment, something that makes their resume stand out. The experts agree: “Internships and co-op programs are a great way for students to build their expertise and get their foot in the door of a potential employer,” according to Marilyn Mackes, executive director of the National Association of Colleges and Employers.
Saint Anselm students work with engineers, politicians, publishers, bankers, financial consultants, and scientists, to name only a few of the unlimited opportunities. In fact, 43 percent of our graduates between 1994 and 2003 participated in an internship for course credit.
They’ve got the classroom stuff down. Now, they want the rest of the story
