“She is a born teacher,” said Fr. Peter Guerin, O.S.B., who was college dean when Sr. Maureen was invited to join the theology faculty in 1989. “Many, many students love her. There is a warmth in her manner that I think is very engaging.”
In demand nationally as a Vatican II expert for Sadlier Publishing Co., Sr. Maureen also receives more requests than she can handle to address parish priests and lay Catholic educators. Her courses at Saint Anselm College are oversubscribed.
“It’s one of those classes I look forward to, even though it’s at 9 in the morning,” Rebecca Zino said of her freshman humanities seminar. “She doesn’t look down on us because we’re freshmen. She expects us to be mature, intelligent adults.”
News reporters also seek out Sr. Maureen. She has provided expert commentary on such events as the clergy sex abuse scandal and the installation of Archbishop Sean O’Malley in Boston. WMUR–TV Manchester reporter Audrey Cox viewed The Passion of the Christ with her before taping an interview about it in March. (Sr. Maureen loved the controversial movie.) Cox says her warm manner and open-minded approach make her a valuable source for television news.
“She doesn’t see things just in black and white,” Cox said. “She is able to examine issues from all sides.”
