The mission of the New Hampshire Institute of Politics (NHIOP) at Saint Anselm College is to educate students and the general public both about contemporary issues and in the practice of democracy.
Founded on the premise that an informed and involved citizenry is requisite to a well-functioning democratic regime, the NHIOP sponsors programs, academic scholarship and research on topics related to citizenship and democracy. In all of its programs and events, the NHIOP remains faithful to its mission of serving both the campus community and the wider public, seeking to provide a forum in which citizens can explore, debate, collaborate, and participate in the organizations, elections, and processes that guide democratic institutions and that shape history in the United States and around the globe.
NHIOP programs and initiatives are nonpartisan. The Institute pays particular attention to the rich political life of New Hampshire, and coordinates all on-campus activities related to the New Hampshire Presidential Primary. It sponsors and develops programs, courses, and publications that focus on the ethical and philosophical dimensions of politics and public policy and seeks to enrich the civic understanding and participation of Saint Anselm students and citizens in the greater community.
The NHIOP partners with local schools and organizations to provide opportunities for students of all ages to develop the civic knowledge and skills they need to be responsible, active citizens. The NHIOP will stay faithful to its mission by continuing to provide a forum in which men and women can explore, discuss, debate, and otherwise participate in the democratic process.
Our civic education initiatives seek to provide Saint Anselm students and the general public with the knowledge and skills necessary to have a positive impact on the communities to which they belong. Students have opportunities to engage with civic leaders, politicians and scholars.
