In March, Beena Sarwar, fellow at the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University, discussed Gender, Media, and Human Rights in Pakistan. Sarwar, the op-ed and features editor with The News International , based in Karachi, and contributing editor in Pakistan for the Kathmandu-based monthly Himal South Asian, detailed the oppression and discrimination that women in Pakistan endure.
Sarwar produced the documentary Naheed's Story, which illustrates the oppression of the famous Pakistani dancer Naheed Siddiqui who was banned from dancing in Pakistan in 1978. In the film, Sarwar traces the dancer's struggle against political, bureaucratic, and religious forces to keep her art form alive.
A graduate of Brown University, Sarwar plans to return to Karachi once her fellowship is complete.
This event was co-sponsored by the World Affairs Council of New Hampshire.
