New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson discussed his life and his recent autobiography, Between Worlds , with Dr. Gary Bouchard's Humanities Seminar at the NHIOP in March. Richardson shared his belief that cultural appreciation and the respect for different points of view form the basis of humanity. Bouchard's seminar students had prepared for the class by reading passages from Richardson's book.
"What would you like to be remembered for in your career?" asked one student. Richardson responded by telling the class that education is of utmost importance to him and that he would like one of his legacies to be the improved school system in New Mexico. Richardson also discussed his role in increasing college scholarship aid and his ability to increase funding for non-traditional students. The subject matter of the hour-long seminar varied from education to American soldiers, to Saddam Hussein, to Fidel Castro.
Richardson served for 15 years as New Mexico's Representative in the 3rd Congressional District. He also served in 1997 as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, and in 1998, he was unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate as Secretary of the U.S. Department of Energy. He currently serves as the governor of New Mexico and is seeking a second term in that office.
