National Crime Victimization Survey

The "NCVS is the Nation's primary source of information on criminal victimization. The Uniform Crime Reports, also known as Crime in the United States, provide a nationwide view of crime based on the submission of statistics by law enforcement agencies throughout the country. "The Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program's Crime Index is composed of selected offenses used to gauge fluctuations in the volume and rate of crime reported to law enforcement. These selected offenses include the violent crimes of murder and non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault, and the property crimes of burglary, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft."

The examples and guidance within the report are derived from the experiences of the Reentry Mapping Network (RMN), a collaborative effort by community-based organizations and the Urban Institute designed to create community change through the mapping and analysis of neighborhood-level data on prisoner reentry. This guidebook outlines the concepts and methods underlying the RMN and the lessons learned by RMN partners so that other jurisdictions can learn from these experiences and create more successful reentry strategies in their own communities.
