Colloquium on Peace, Reconciliation, Social Justice, and Global Citizenship - July 1-13, 2007 at Saint Anselm College

Can you envision
a socially just and peaceful world based on belief in the dignity and sanctity of the human person; the creation of laws and public policies that strengthen families and communities, protect the poor and vulnerable, equitably distribute the resources necessary for leading dignified lives; and protect the environment by promoting the type of sustainable development necessary to responsible stewardship of the planet?

What is being done
nationally and internationally to build such a world? What more needs to be done?

What can you do
to become a peacemaker?

TPeace Muralhese questions and many more will be addressed this summer at the Colloquium on Peace, Reconciliation, Social Justice, and Global Citizenship, a two-week, intensive, interdisciplinary, residential program in peace-making, non-violence and global citizenship, rooted in the teachings of social justice, July 1-13 in the retreat-like setting of Saint Anselm College.

Featuring Participants From Both Sides of the Atlantic
This colloquium will combine students from Saint Anselm College and Saint Mary’s University College in Belfast, Northern Ireland to engage in a critical, inter-disciplinary examination of the factors that cause conflict and violence and the strategies that build peace, consensus, and promote the common good.

Focus and Learning Model
The historically troubled situation in Northern Ireland’s Six Counties will provide a particular focus for research, study and discussion. Ever since the Good Friday peace accords of 1998, dramatic change has been under way in Northern Ireland that is becoming an inspiration for other locations of protracted violence. Lessons learned in Northern Ireland offer a powerful model for addressing conflict resolution in other parts of the world including South Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East.

Colloquium Format and Guest Speakers
Saint Anselm College faculty will be joined by prominent guest speakers in offering a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops, reflective exercises, discussions and film presentations designed to increase understanding of the

  • problems created by social, economic ,and political injustice globally
  • causes and dynamics of violent group conflict
  • core principles of and strategies for effective peace-building and sustained reconciliation
  • responsibilities imposed by global citizenship in creating a peaceful and just world.

Interact With Scholars and Experts
Drawing from the disciplines of literature, communications, philosophy, history, politics, criminal justice, psychology, sociology, theology, and actual peace and reconciliation experiences, the colloquium will be structured in the style of a professional academic conference providing students an opportunity to interact informally with scholars and experts. This approach facilitates developing the leadership skills required to translate ethical and moral principles into action.

Field trips will enhance the classroom experience and enable students to examine civic dialogue in historic, contemporary, and spiritual settings. Recreational and social activities are designed to facilitate joint study, critical exchange, and intercultural learning.
