Activities to Prepare for Remote Instruction


1.     Make sure your computer is up-to-date – This includes making sure the operating system is updated as well of the browsers and Microsoft Office.  How many times have you ignored the pop-up message asking you to install updates.  Now is the time to say yes and get everything up-to-date.
 

2.     Make sure Microsoft Office is installed on your computer.  Each student has the license to download and install Microsoft Office on up to five computers.  Do you realize the endless amount of possibilities you have with five full installations of Microsoft Office?  If you are ambidextrous you could install Microsoft Office on two different computers and then write two separate papers at the same time.  You could be the Thomas Aquinas of 2020.  Always remember, “work smarter, not harder”.  On a more serious note, if you do not have Microsoft Office installed on your computer please follow the instructions provided in the ‘Microsoft Office Installation’.  It’s a small six-step guide that you need to follow to get up and running with Office.
 

3.     Some students will need to access resources on the College’s Citrix environment.  You may need to connect to access files for a particular course or to access specialized software needed for your class.  If you are unaware of how to access Citrix please follow the instructions provided in the ‘Connecting to Citrix’ PDF.  This is a short five-step guide that should get you up and running quickly.  If you experience any confusion about accessing your network drives on Citrix, please refer to the documentation on that as well, titled ‘Citrix Network Drives’.
 

4.     Many of your professors will be using Canvas as the primary means to share course content with you.  Please update your Canvas Notifications so that you are notified of changes and updates to the course on Canvas.  See the attached documentation of the suggested Canvas Notifications settings.
 

5.     Check your Email, Check your Email, Check your Email.  If it isn’t a habit, it is time to make it a habit.  Make sure your email is enabled on all your devices, your phone, tablet, laptop, desktop computer.  Before I forget, Check your Email.
 

6.     Some of your professors will use Zoom or Google Hangouts to have real-time audio/video lectures and discussions.  Both of these solutions are easy to use.  To access the real-time session, click on the link that is provided to you by your professors.  The first time you use Zoom on your computer you will be prompted to download the software and provide basic information to setup your Zoom account.  All students have access to the Google Suite, this includes Google Hangouts.  No additional software is needed, just an up-to-date computer and browser (refer to item #1).
