October 1st marked U.S. Senator Jeff Flake’s (R-AZ) second visit to the New Hampshire Institute of Politics (NHIOP) this year, after appearing at a Politics & Eggs breakfast in March.

Senator Flake’s address, “After the Deluge: A Rejection of Destructive Politics and a Return to Principle,” followed the Senate Judiciary Committee’s September 28 vote on whether to approve Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court nomination. The Senator gained national attention during the vote when he called for an FBI investigation before sending the decision to the full Senate.

In addition to his role on the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator Flake discussed partisanship in the current political climate. He encouraged audience members to think beyond tribal loyalties, saying that “the only tribe to which any of us owes allegiance is the American tribe.”

Following the program, Sarah Murphy ’20, a Kevin B. Harrington Student Ambassador, asked Senator Flake his favorite thing about visiting the NHIOP. He replied, “There are good, decent people here who are smart and understand the issues.”
