A Christmas message from Dr. Favazza
December 22, 2019
"In Him was life, and the life with the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1: 4-5)
Even though the Gospel of John does not include a narrative of Jesus’ birth, these two sentences from John’s Prologue is a succinct summary of what Christians believe about Christmas. A life of singular significance has illuminated history and neither the darkness of human impulses nor systems of oppression have not extinguished it. It is a light that gives hope even in the face of a doubtful present and a fragile future. It is a light that allows us to see that just as God could become one of us, we can discover the divine light at our core.
As a city of light set on a hilltop, Saint Anselm College continues to provide a transformative living and learning environment for students illumined in the Catholic and Benedictine vision of hospitality and humility, compassion and community. No matter how many challenges we face, we will not waiver in our commitment to live out our mission one student at a time.
This Christmas season, through numerous alumni events, we have been overwhelmed by the love and support of graduates of St. A’s. They are a living testament to the power of a Saint Anselm education and how well we prepare students to bring the light of the Hilltop into the world.
In your honor, we are making a donation to the Hilltop Annual Scholarship, a fund that supports traditionally underrepresented, low-income, first-generation and international students. We wish members of our community – the students, faculty, staff, monastery, parents, alums and friends – a blessed Christmas filled with a light that cannot be overcome and a New Year that filled with the possibility of a recreated world.
