To the Saint Anselm Community,
We have pledged to share developments regarding our COVID-19 testing and health protocols throughout the semester. In this spirit, I share with you that we had four positive test results today. The students have been moved to isolation housing and known contacts have been quarantined until further testing, as part of our COVID-19 protocols. We have notified State health officials who will lead the contact tracing efforts and we will quarantine additional students as necessary. You may be aware of students already in quarantine housing, but up until now, these incidences are the result of out-of-state travel, rather than positive test results.
As you know, we are conducting surveillance testing of 400 students per week, including those in high-risk categories, student athletes, and a random sampling of other residential students. More than 3,000 tests have been administered this semester; two students tested positive during the August move-in week, prior to today’s results.
In making our plans for reopening this fall, we realized it was possible COVID-19 would appear on campus. For this reason, we prepared a detailed quarantine and isolation strategy in the event of a positive test. Of course, we would prefer to have no positive cases, but these incidences have affirmed the importance of remaining in a state of readiness.
To be sure, these positive tests remind us that our community is not immune to the coronavirus and we must remain steadfast in our commitment to the Anselmian Community Care Covenant. Please remember, it is vital that we:
- Watch your emails and report for surveillance testing at your assigned time
- Respond honestly and forthrightly if contacted by the State for contact tracing
- Wear a mask and maintain physical distancing
- Restrict close contact to a “family unit,” defined as the use of a shared bathroom
- Do not invite visitors to campus
- Maximize what you do outdoors – again, physically distanced and masked
- And, most critically, refrain from making off-campus trips
I’m sure this news is disappointing, as the vast majority of our community is taking these precautions seriously – please know that your efforts are sincerely appreciated and they are making a difference. Let’s keep our guard up and continue to do the right things to protect our Anselmian community.
As a reminder, rapid COVID testing is available on campus Monday-Thursday in the Sullivan Arena. Every student is involved in the random selection process, but if you would like to ask for a test confidentially, please contact Maura Marshall at firstname.lastname@example.org and she will be happy to schedule you a day and time. Also, please contact Health Services with any questions and prior to any necessary off-campus travel.
We will continue to provide updates throughout the semester and encourage you to visit anselm.edu/covid-19-response. Please be assured that nothing is more important than the health and safety of our community.
Joseph A. Favazza, Ph.D.
