The Global Programs Portfolio Portal (VIATRM) allows students to investigate and search for specific types of programs. Utilizing a powerful filtering tool, you can search for programs in specific countries or locations, added opportunities such as volunteering or internships, specific areas of study, and virtual options. Start by creating your account here. Meet with your academic advisor and the Office of International Programs to fine tune your search process to find the best program for you!
Apply
Applying to study abroad is a two-part process. Students begin by creating a profile in the Global Programs Portal. Once approved by the OIP, students may then apply directly to their selected program on their provider website.
Once you’ve selected a program and begun the application process, you’ll need to get your courses approved. All courses taken abroad must be pre-approved by academic advisors, department chairs or the Registrar. In order for credits to transfer, students must achieve a “C” or better. Typically courses will transfer back to as 3-credits per course, with occasional exceptions depending on the type of course. It is important to note that grades do NOT transfer back, only credits.
We have a growing list of previously approved core courses and subject courses from a wide array of programs and host universities. Stop by the office or email jbjerkliebarry@anselm.edu or studyabroad@anselm.edu to request the most updated list of pre-approved courses to help with the selection process.
Finances and Scholarships
Studying abroad is an investment in your future. Like any other type of investment, it requires careful planning and management. However, the personal, academic, and professional rewards that you will gain from this experience will last a lifetime. The following information is provided in order to better assist prospective and current study abroad applicants in planning and financing their international experience.
Students will pay full-time tuition plus the corresponding Study Abroad Application fee ($900 for showcase or Tuscania; $1780 for Petitioned). Students will be charged directly by the program provider or host institution for room and board fees (if applicable). Saint Anselm will pay host institution tuition on the student’s behalf.
Financial Aid applications must be completed by MARCH 15TH (one month earlier than deadline) for students who will study abroad. Eligibility for merit and need-based aid will be assessed using the off-campus aiding policy. Thus, institutional aid will be proportional to a student’s residential aid for the semester the student studies abroad.
Students are required to meet with the Office of Financial Aid (Tricia Brunton) to discuss your plans to study abroad. The following financial resources are intended for campus study only and not portable for study abroad:
- Aid for international students
- Resident assistant (RA) grants
- Athletic aid
- Debate and yearbook scholarships
- Any full-tuition remission scholarships from any of the tuition remission programs. [Recipients are encouraged to apply for need=-based aid for study abroad.]
To utilize your Financial Aid while abroad you will be required to sign off on the Consortium Agreement for Financial Aid, a form completed by you, the SAC Financial Aid team, and your program provider.
Scholarship Resources
There are many scholarship opportunities for study abroad! Those listed here all have very specific deadlines, so be sure to review requirements early in the study abroad application process.
Students who enroll in Saint Anselm in Tuscania will automatically be awarded scholarships. In addition, students enrolled in any API Abroad programs will receive a pre-determined award. Students may apply for scholarships through other providers.

Each scholarship program has specific application deadlines and criteria. Please visit each scholarship program's website for additional, up to date information.
Diversity Abroad Study Abroad Scholarship & Grant Directory - Provides a list of scholarship and grant opportunities for specific programs and locations. Awards range from $500 - $9,000.
IIE Passport Study Abroad Funding - This funding resource allows you to search a comprehensive database by country or subject to find study abroad scholarships, fellowships, and grants applicable to your study abroad experience.
FinAid - FinAid is a comprehensive database of student financial aid information, with a large portion devoted to study abroad funding.
International Education Financial Aid - IEFA is a resource for financial aid, college scholarship and grant information for US and international students wishing to study abroad. At this site, you will find a comprehensive college scholarship search and grant listings plus international student loan programs and other information to promote study abroad.
Scholarships at GoAbroad.com - Search for funding based on region, level, and field of study.
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program - This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at a 2-year or 4-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. (For deadlines, check website)
Boren Scholarship Program - Boren Scholarships and Fellowships provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to add an important international and language component to their educations. We focus on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study that are critical to U.S. national security, broadly defined, and underrepresented in study abroad. Locations include Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America & the Caribbean, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded. (For deadlines, check website)
Ashleys Foundation Scholarship - To award scholarship to qualified students for travel and study abroad, based on merit, personal qualities, and/or financial needs. The scholarship shall be in the amount of $2,500.(Deadline for SP20: 10/1/19)
Sara's Wish - Sara's Wish Foundation scholarships are awarded to extraordinary young women committed to making the world a better place by fully participating in it.
Fund for Education Abroad - FEA is committed to increasing the opportunities for dedicated American students to participate in high-quality, rigorous education abroad programs by reducing financial restrictions through the provision of grants and scholarships. (Deadline for SP20: 9/10/19)
Freeman-ASIA - Freeman Awards for Study in Asia provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. (For deadlines, check website)
Critical Language Scholarship - Critical Language Scholarships (CLS) for Intensive Summer Institutes is a program of the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and is administered by the Council of American Overseas Research Centers and the American Councils for International Education. The CLS Program offer intensive overseas study in the critical need foreign languages such as Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla/Bengali, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Turkish, and Urdu.
Study Abroad in Japan: Bridging Scholarships - The Bridging Project offers scholarships to American undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Scholarship award amounts are $2,500 (semester) and $4,000(academic year prg.) to assist students with the travel and living expenses they will incur while studying abroad in Japan for a semester or an academic year.
Fulbright - Established in 1946 and sponsored by the US Department of State, the Fulbright Program offers opportunities for students, scholars, and professionals to participate in international education programs.
