Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is employment which is authorized by the Primary Designated School Official. If practical training is required for program completion it will always qualify for CPT. If training is not required, it may still count for CPT if it is done for academic credit and is an integral part of the curriculum.
Curricular Practical Training may be part-time (up to 20 hours per week) while the student is enrolled in classes. Students who are authorized for part time CPT must be very careful not to exceed 20 hours/week limit. This is not an average; it is absolute.
Student eligibility for CPT:
- Student must be in lawful F-1 status.
- Student must have been enrolled for a full academic year.
Employment eligibility for CPT:
- Work must be related to your major field of study as indicated on your current I-20.
- It must be appropriate to your degree level
- The employment authorization given for CPT by the PDSO is employer specific and job specific.
Complete the Curricular Practical Training Application (PDF/32KB). Economics and Business majors submit the completed form to the internship director firstname.lastname@example.org. If the internship is approved, the application will be forwarded to the PDSO for SEVIS processing.
All other majors, complete the application and submit it to your department's internship coordinator. If the internship is approved the completed application will be forwarded to the PDSO for SEVIS processing.
Applications must be submitted at least two weeks before the proposed beginning of employment.
All applications must be accompanied by a letter from the employer describing the job title, job responsibilities, begin and end dates of employment, number of hours per week, and place of employment.
The PDSO will review the information and make a determination if CPT is appropriate.
The PDSO will enter the employment authorization into the SEVIS system, and return to the student the properly endorsed I-20.
