Forty-five students are in the midst of a 130-mile walk, from Lewiston, Maine, back to the Saint Anselm College campus. The eight-day Road For Hope (RFH) raises funds for nine charities in the two states along the route. More than $24,000 has been raised to date.
Among the 39 students walking the entire way, and six student-leaders who take turns walking, driving support vehicles and managing logistics, 18 are participating in the program for the second time. Seniors Joey Smith and Madison Vigneault will participate for the third year in a row.
Each participant spends the summer preparing for the walk by fundraising, and making mental, physical, and spiritual preparations for the challenging but rewarding experience.
"Road For Hope helps me become aware of the community I live in," says Cassidy Diaz '19, who is in the midst of her second RFH experience. "Walking RFH has revealed to me the immense need in the communities around Saint Anselm College, and it also gave me a chance to meet and become more aware of the incredible, inspiring people that I go to school with," she says. "I'm looking forward to just being fully present with the other walkers on RFH for 130 miles and not having to worry about anything but putting one foot in front of the other and getting to know the person next to me."
Theodore (Ted) Boivin '18 is taking part in his first RFH experience. "The feeling of contributing to something so much bigger than yourself is worth it, and when you finally do get to rest it's so much better from the hard work you've already done," he says.
The journey was first imagined by Fr. Seamus Griesbach, a Maine native and Saint Anselm College alumnus, who mapped and walked the route that has evolved into the current-day program, now in its 19th year.
The group will return to campus on Saturday, August 26, where they will be welcomed back by friends, family, and fellow students.
