History 349 (Hi 39) Special Topics (Honors): Imperial Spain

Class Meeting Time: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1:00PM-2:15PM

Description of the Course: This course examines Spanish history from roughly 1500 to 1800. Topics will include the creation of the Spanish state, political liberty in 'absolutist' Spain, the Spanish empire in Europe and America, the Bourbon reforms of the eighteenth century, the Spanish Church and the Catholic Reformation, and early modern Spanish culture. The course will use early modern literature and primary sources to examine these issues. This class is open to Honors students only.
