Dr. Ann V. Norton specializes in twentieth-century British literature and literature by women writers, as well as Romantic and Victorian literature. She joined the English department in 1994 after completing her Ph.D. at Columbia University. Dr. Norton teaches survey and special topics courses in nineteenth and twentieth-century British literature, Freshman English, Introduction to Literary Studies, and twentieth-century American fiction written by women. She also teaches in the Humanities program, where she lectures in the Freud and Woolf units.

Dr. Norton’s book, Paradoxical Feminism: The Novels of Rebecca West, was published in 2000, and she is Vice President of the International Rebecca West Society as well as its newsletter and website editor. She has edited and analyzed some of West’s posthumously published fiction, and has published articles on Edna O’Brien, Virginia Woolf, Mary Lavin, and Dorothy L. Sayers. Dr. Norton has written introductions for the Barnes and Noble edition of West’s The Return of the Soldier, as well as for Ruth Doan MacDougall’s New Hampshire-set trilogy The Cheerleader, Snowy, and Henrietta Snow.

Dr. Norton now chairs the English department and has served on the Faculty Senate and numerous college committees.
