PROFESSIONAL THEATRE FOR YOUNG AUDIENCES
Wednesday 24 May 9:30 & 11:30 a.m.
The Dallas Children’s Theatre in
Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters

Since 1984, Dallas Children’s Theater has provided professional theatre for young audiences that reflects the cultural diversity of our communities through both its casting and its themes. In Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters, the tradition continues with a gorgeous adaptation of John Steptoe’s beautiful Caldecott Medal-winning story about two girls vying to be the Great King’s bride, in an African interpretation of the tale of Cinderella. In this story, both daughters are beautiful, but to prove their worthiness, they must pass a series of tests. In the end, the kind, patient Nyasha becomes Queen, and the prideful, spiteful Manyara meets her just deserts very satisfyingly. With Karen Abbott’s sensitive and humorous adaptation, and music that features traditional chanting, rhythmic drumming, and glorious African song, Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters is a theatrical feast that celebrates goodness, generosity, and love. Students and teachers will cherish this story brought to life in live performance.
