Coriglia/Orvieto Excavation

We have opened applications to excavate in Italy during the summer of 2022 with the Coriglia/Orvieto Project.  This international archaeological project is sponsored by the Department of Classics at Saint Anselm College.  The Department’s works in Italy are conducted in cooperation with the Parco Archeologico dell'Orvietano and civic and archaeological officials of the towns of Orvieto and Castel Viscardo, the village of Monterubiaglio, and the Soprintendenza per I Beni Archeologici dell’Umbria.   

This archaeological expedition is part of a long-term project to excavate and understand Coriglia, an Etrusco-Roman settlement located approximately 8 miles from Orvieto.  Participants will have the opportunity to gain experience in diverse aspects of the broad field of archaeology by participating not only in the field, but also in the lab.  They will learn how to clean, identify, and document artifacts from the excavations. 


Requirements

The project accepts participants with or without prior archaeological experience.  English is spoken on the dig, while Italian language skills are useful, they are not required.  Participants must be at least eighteen years of age (17 with parental consent) and must be in good health.

  1. All participants must provide proof of medical insurance (a copy of an up-to-date insurance card)

  2. All participants must have a valid passport and provide a copy of the first page to the director.

  3. All participants must show proof of being fully vaccinated against Covid + booster.

  4. The complete participation fee of $650 per week ($3000 for five weeks) must be paid before the final due date.


    Program Cost and Application Procedures

    The cost to participate in the full six-week archaeological project is $3600.  Three and four week stays are pro-rated at a cost of $650/week.  This fee pays for your room and meals (full board.)  The fee does not include airfare, tuition, travel to or from the airport, or weekend trips or day-trips that participants may take on their own.  


    Acceptance

    Applicants will be notified of acceptance on a rolling basis beginning March 1st.   Applications received after April 10th will be considered but will only be accepted if space allows.  Participants will be asked to provide information on allergies or any special needs they may have after the initial acceptance of their application.


Payment Procedure

Upon your acceptance, we will issue you an invoice for your fee which can be paid online. The deposit required to hold your place will be applied to your fee balance if you choose to make separate payments.
