“Partisan Politics: What’s New? What’s Not? What’s Next” - James A. Morone, PhD.

American politics can feel more divided and contentious than ever. But how much is truly new—and how much reflects longstanding patterns in American political life?

Drawing on his book Republic of Wrath: How American Politics Turned Tribal from George Washington to Donald Trump, James A. Morone will place today’s hyper-partisan politics in historical perspective. He will explore how the Trump Administration is, in some ways, unprecedented. And in other ways, it is simply the latest inflection to a long historical trend.

How did we get here? Do today’s divisions pose an unusual challenge to the republic, or are we experiencing another particularly turbulent chapter in the nation’s political history? What comes next? And what might we do to calm the partisan storm?

James A. Morone is the John Hazel White Professor Emeritus of Political Science, Public Policy and Urban Studies at Brown University. He is the author of 11 books and nearly 200 essays on topics ranging from American history and health care policy to politics and popular culture. His books include The Democratic Wish; Hellfire Nation: The Politics of Sin in American History; Republic of Wrath; and Whiplash: From the Battle for Obamacare to the War on Science. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The American Prospect, and the London Review of Books.
