Saint Anselm College is proud to announce a new academic opportunity for students pursuing a degree in physics. In collaboration with the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML), the college has established the 4+1 Master of Science Program in Physics - a streamlined pathway that allows students to earn both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in just five years.
Beginning this year, eligible physics majors at Saint Anselm can apply to the 4+1 program as early as their junior year to take advantage of this accelerated academic experience. Through the partnership, students may complete up to six graduate credits at UML during their undergraduate studies at Saint Anselm, helping them fast-track their master's degree and gain a competitive edge in the job market.
“We're really excited about the 4+1 Master’s of Science program with UMass Lowell,” shares Physics Professor Alexander Smith. “This fast-track option lets students earn both their bachelor’s and master’s degrees in just five years while specializing in physics, medical physics, optical science, or radiological science and protection. A master’s degree gives our grads a big edge in the job market, helping them gain the advanced skills that employers are looking for."
Students accepted into the 4+1 program will be able to apply select graduate courses at UMass Lowell toward both their undergraduate and graduate degrees. This dual-credit structure can reduce the total time and cost required to earn an M.S. in Physics while offering early exposure to graduate-level coursework.
Program options include:
- M.S. in Physics
- M.S. in Radiological Sciences and Protection
- M.S. in Medical Physics
To be eligible for the program, students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and at least a 3.2 GPA in STEM courses by the end of their junior year. In addition to completing UMass Lowell’s graduate admissions application, students must submit a statement of purpose, official transcripts, and two letters of recommendation, including one from a Saint Anselm physics faculty member. There is no application fee or GRE requirement for qualified applicants.
While taking UMass Lowell graduate courses during their senior year, Saint Anselm students will remain enrolled at Saint Anselm for financial aid purposes. After officially enrolling in the UMass Lowell master’s program, students will become eligible for the same scholarships and funding opportunities as other graduate students.
“This partnership reflects our commitment to providing pathways that are both rigorous and forward-thinking,” says Physics Professor Ian Durham. The collaboration is designed to support students academically and financially, ensuring a smooth transition from undergraduate to graduate study.
