Saint Anselm College’s distinctive study-abroad opportunities are returning after several semesters of pandemic limitations.
Beginning in the 2022-2023 academic year, students will have the opportunity to live in Tuscania, Italy during the spring semester. The Tuscania experience will be rich with cultural immersion in a small Italian town with a deep medieval history, with weekly excursions and service learning opportunities planned. Trips to Naples, Florence, Tivoli and other locations will be part of the program. Students will be taught courses by Saint Anselm faculty.
“We are thrilled to launch the Tuscania program in Spring 2023 and it couldn't be happening at a better time, as we are shift back to our full pre-pandemic complement of study abroad opportunities,” said Director of Study Abroad Jane Bjerklie-Barry.
The college is partnering with Academic Programs International (API) to help manage the Tuscania program. API is dedicated to providing high-quality experiential education programs that are designed to enrich the lives of students and the communities in which they are placed.
In previous years, the college operated a semester-long program in Orvieto, Italy that was founded by two Saint Anselm professors, Linda Rulman and David George of the Classics department. The Tuscania program will be built on that foundation and allow the college to offer a new transformative experience for students with the support of an organization that specializes in managing study-abroad opportunities.
“I am immensely grateful to Linda and David,” said Dr. Joseph A. Favazza, president of Saint Anselm. “Their tireless dedication to the Orvieto program, which they created and now serves as a foundation for the future, provided an amazing experience for so many of our students. They helped us realize the possibilities for creating a truly distinctive Anselmian experience.”
Added Bjerklie-Barry, “(Tuscania) is a program designed off the tremendous success of the college's signature Orvieto term, with students having an abundance of transformative learning opportunities unlike any others. We look forward to ‘being Anselmian’ in this beautiful and historic town in central Italy.”
In addition to Tuscania, the college is resuming a broad menu of programs in countries across the globe, along with virtual, global innovation labs that are embedded in Saint Anselm courses, for the 2022-2023 academic year. The shorter-term global seminars also will continue, including several programs this spring and summer:
- “Music and Culture in Vienna,” led by Andrew Haringer of the Fine Arts department.
- “Advanced Spanish Immersion and Internship” to Argentina, led by Beth Fouts of the Modern Languages department.
- “Community and Public Health Nursing,” in Costa Rica, led by Pam Preston of the Nursing department.
