MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team will battle No. 9 Southern New Hampshire University in the First Round of the Northeast-10 Conference postseason on Tuesday, May 10.

The contest, which features the fourth-seeded Hawks and the top-seeded Penmen, will be played at Sullivan Park with Southern New Hampshire batting at the home team. The tilt is scheduled for a 3 p.m. first pitch.

Saint Anselm closed its regular season with a doubleheader sweep of American International College, bringing the team to .500 in 2022 at 22-22 overall. Saint Anselm finished in a tie with Assumption University at 13-11 in conference play but due to the Greyhounds taking three of four from the Hawks on Mar. 26 and Mar. 27. Assumption earned the third seed with the Hawks going to the fourth. Saint Anselm has won eight of its last 10 games entering the NE10 Postseason.

Southern New Hampshire swept Assumption to close their regular season, improving to 37-8 overall and 21-3 in NE10 play. Since the four-game series against the Hawks, which concluded on Apr. 10, the Penmen are 17-1 will three conference series sweeps, three non-conference wins, and took three of four from Franklin Pierce University, marking their only loss in that stretch.

Fans are reminded that Sullivan Park is a pet-free facility and no alcoholic beverages are permitted at the facility.

SCOUTING SAINT ANSELM

  • Saint Anselm belted 12 home runs in the double header against American International with six in each game. With the first home run in game one, off the bat of junior Brady Doran(Greenville, S.C), the 2022 squad broke the program record for home runs in a single season, surpassing the 2001 team who hit 45.
  • The Hawks tied their single-game record in both games for home runs in a single game, having now hit six in a game four times in program history.
  • The Hawks are also the first team in NCAA Division II to hit six homers in each end of a doubleheader this season.
  • Senior Kyle Maurice(Exeter, N.H.) and junior Mike Borrelli(Salisbury, Mass.) led Saint Anselm in the doubleheader with three home runs each. Borrelli gave the Hawks a walk-off win in game one with his third homer of the game. Maurice came up a three-run home run short of the home run cycle, having hit a solo, a two-run, and a grand slam in game two.
  • Doran, senior Matt Collins (Beverly, Mass.), graduate student Salvatore Pezzolla(East Greenbush, N.Y.), sophomore Nolan Elmore (Brentwood, N.H.), and junior Will Panarello(Barrington, R.I.) recorded home runs on the day.
  • For Collins, who reached 100 career hits in game one against the Yellow Jackets, slugged two homers in that contest as well, marking the first multi-homer game of his collegiate career.
  • Panarello's solo home run in game two marked the first big fly of his college career.
  • Maurice is batting .391 this season which is fifth highest in team annals. His batting average also ranks fourth in the NE10 while his 14 home runs leads the league. He is tied for second in the conference with 48 runs batted in while ranking sixth with 44 runs scored. Maurice is slugging at .791 which is third best in the NE10.
  • Maurice's home run total is second most in a single season in program history. The senior currently ranks ninth in hits (61), third in runs batted in (44), and is tied for third in runs scored (44) all in a single season. He needs just 13 hits to reach 100 for his career on the Hilltop.
  • Borrelli is second on the Hawks with a .325 batting average and with 10 home runs. Borrelli owns a .656 slugging percentage to go with 31 runs batted in and 37 runs. He ranks second on the team with 12 doubles and leads with four triples.
  • Pezzolla is batting .290 to rank third on the team. He has scored 39 runs which is second most on the team and has 13 doubles to lead the Hawks. Pezzolla has driven in 35 runs which is also second on the team.
  • Doran and Collins are batting .268 and .262 each respectively this season. Doran's seven home runs are fourth most on the team. He is responsible for 34 runs scored and 34 runs batted in. Collins joins Pezzolla as the only student-athletes to start in all 44 games this season. Collins has crossed the plate 28 times with 43 hits. 12 of his hits have gone for extra bases.
  • Freshman Adam Betty(Lowell, Mass.) leads the Saint Anselm starters with 11 starts this season. He is 4-4 with a 7.99 earned-run average. He has fanned 46 batters, second most on the squad, in a team-high 56.1 innings pitched.
  • Sophomore Matthew Michel(Haverhill, Mass.) leads the team with five wins in 2022 and leads the starters with a 4.46 earned-run average. Michael ranks second on the squad with 40.1 innings pitched.
  • Sophomore Will Hunter(Middleton, Mass.) and junior Avery Mosseau(Bedford, N.H.) lead the Hawks relievers with 14 and 13 appearances each. Hunter is 3-0 with one save and a 6.39 earned-run average. He has also made two starts and sits at 38.0 innings pitched. Mosseau owns a 5.25 earned-run average in 24.0 innings pitched. He is 2-2 with a team-high three saves.
  • The Hawks defense has committed 58 errors in 1,449 chances, good for a .960 fielding percentage. That is the sixth best mark in the conference.

SCOUTING SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE

  • Nick Schwartz leads the Penmen offense, batting .393 in 43 games played. Schwartz ranks third in the NE10 in batting average. He has scored 41 runs and has registered a team-high 14 doubles to with a triple and seven home runs. Schwartz is third on the Penmen with 33 runs batted in.
  • Cam Caraher, Sam Henrie, Idelson Taveras, and Cristian Mercedes are batting over .300 for Southern New Hampshire this season. Dakota Mulcay and Danniel Rivera are sitting just below at .299 and .284.
  • Henrie leads the Penmen with nine home runs and 38 runs batted in. He is also the only student-athlete to appear in all 45 games this season for Southern New Hampshire. Henrie's 56 hits are the most on the team while Schwartz and Mercedes follow closely with 55 and 54 each.
  • Mercedes ranks second on the team with 35 runs batted in while Mulcay ranks fourth in the same category at 31.
  • Rivera is 27-for-31 in stolen bases to lead a group that has swiped 87 bags this season, third most in the NE10.
  • Brandon White and Josh Roberge lead the Penmen starters with 11 and 10 starts each. The duo is tied for the team lead with seven wins each which is also tied for third most in the conference. White owns a 2.93 earned-run average in 61.1 innings pitched while Roberge has a team-high 64.1 innings pitched and a 3.64 earned-run average. Roberge ranks fifth in the conference with 77 strikeouts this season.
  • Trevor Anibal is tied for the team lead with 12 appearances, all in relief this season. He has a team-low 1.72 earned-run average in 31.1 innings pitched. He also has a team-high three saves in 2022.
  • Griffin Gilbert, Conner Wagstaff, and Preston Yerrington have all made double digit appearances in relief this season.
  • Southern New Hampshire is third in the NE10 with a .965 fielding percentage. They have made 55 errors in 1,570 chances.

THIS SEASON, SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE vs. SAINT ANSELM

  • The squads met five times in 2022 with the Penmen winning the five-game series, three games to two.
  • Southern New Hampshire grabbed a 10-5 win in a non-conference tilt on Mar. 30 and opened the four-game NE10 series with a 9-8 win in extra innings on Apr. 7.
  • Saint Anselm snapped a 26-game losing streak to Southern New Hampshire with a 13-11 win on Friday, Apr. 8 before grabbing an 11-8 win to open the doubleheader on Apr. 10. The pair of wins for Saint Anselm marked the first time since 2012 that the Hawks had won back-to-back games over the Penmen.
  • Southern New Hampshire closed the series with a 5-3 win to split the doubleheader and to take the season series.

ALL-TIME in NE10 POSTSEASON PLAY

  • This will be the 10th appearance in the conference playoffs for the Hawks. The program is 4-10 in NE10 postseason games.
  • Saint Anselm most recently appeared in the NE10 postseason in 2021. The Hawks fell to Bentley University by a 15-13 score on May 11, 2021 in the Divisional First Round.
  • The Hawks are making consecutive conference postseason appearances for the first time since the 2005 and 2006 seasons.
  • The last win for Saint Anselm in the NE10 postseason was on May 11, 2012 which was a 14-8 win over Le Moyne College.

ALL-TIME vs. SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE

  • This will be the 139th meeting between the two programs all-time and the sixth time this season. Southern New Hampshire in 86-52 against Saint Anselm all-time.
  • The only opponent who the Hawks have battled more than the Penmen is Bentley. The Hawks and Falcons have met 144 times.
  • The programs will meet in the NE10 postseason for the first time on Tuesday. They have met once in the NCAA postseason on May 18, 2012, marking the first win in the NCAA postseason for the Hawks in program history.
