On Wednesday, Feb. 24, Saint Anselm College faculty gathered for the 7th Annual Celebration of Research and Scholarship for 2020. Held in a virtual setting, President Joseph A. Favazza, Ph.D., and Dean of the College, Mark Cronin, Ph.D., joined in recognizing three faculty members who shared their recent research.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Favazza noted that this celebration “serves as a model of our faculty’s dedication to learning. It connects teaching and research, pursues new knowledge, and pursues new knowers.”
The college recognized 48 faculty members for their research and publications but highlighted the research of three faculty members who shared the findings from their research.
Biology Department Chair Brian Penney, Ph.D., presented his research “Spicules and Skeletons: Mantle Musculature of Two Species of Dorid Nudibranchs (Gastropoda: Nudibranchia: Doridina),” which discusses student-assisted research on the microbiology of sea slugs. In his findings, Professor Penney explores the functions of complex body structures in mollusks.
Professor Jaime Orrego, Ph.D., of the Modern Languages and Literatures Department, also spoke at the event and discussed his work titled “Buscando los Orígenes en El Día Señalado: La Agricultura Como Respuesta a la Violencia” or, in English, “The Search for Origins in El Día Señalado: Agriculture as an answer to violence.” During the event, Orrego discussed La Violencia, a ten-year civil war in Colombia lasting from 1948 to 1958. His research focuses on the role agriculture and community can play in managing violence.
“Perceptions of Couplehood Among Community-Dwelling Spousal Caregivers” was published by Professor Elizabeth Hahn Rickenbach, Ph.D., of the Psychology Department. The research focused on couplehood of a person coupled with someone who has a chronic illness or disability. Rickenbach’s study concluded that undertaking the role of spousal caregiver can significantly affect couplehood in both positive and negative ways. Due to this concept, couples may describe their roles differently depending on their level of couplehood.
