The Center for Ethics in Society's 2022 Goodchild High School Ethics Bowl was featured in The Malone Telegram recently. The story features Franklin Academy students who competed in the Bowl, finishing in second place. Franklin Academy of Malone, N.Y. is a public school with a high proportion of students on free and reduced lunch. From the story:
According to one of the team’s students, MaKenna Monette, a junior at Franklin Academy, the event was a positive experience in which they could have a constructive and civil debate on a wide range of topics.
“Instead of the debates that we see in politics on TV, where people just argue with each other,” Monette said, “we figured out a way where we could talk to other students and work on solutions to issues that are talked about constantly in the media.”
Monette said she appreciated the opportunity to travel out of state and take part in the first event for the school’s bioethics team.
“This experience really changed our lives,” Monette said. “With this start we can really build on this in the future.”
The Goodchild Ethics Bowl, which is made possible by the support of Kenneth J. Goodchild '69, is an official regional competition of the National High School Ethics Bowl. Saint Anselm College faculty and members of the Center for Ethics in Society's Advisory Board were among the judges in this year's competition, which was won by Phillips Exeter Academy.
