Define Your Goals and Objectives

Students are encouraged to spend time reflecting on reasons for a global experience. What type of courses do you need to take? What you are hoping to gain from the experience (e.g. language acquisition, career readiness and resume building, cultural experience, personal growth, etc.)?

Learn about your country/countries and cultures of interest. Do you know anything about the people, government, cities, culture, religion? Knowing a little more about locations will help you to make an educated decision about your study abroad destination

If, after reviewing the Global Portfolio you cannot find a program, we offer the option to petition for approval to a different program. See below for information on the Petitioned Programs process.

Plan ahead! Students should plan out their experiences with their academic advisor to ensure proper course selection in order to graduate on time. With good planning, students can take courses that fulfill core requirements, major or minor requirements, and a wide array of general electives. Students will work with academic advisors and the Office of International Programs to obtain mandatory course approvals.

Students utilize the Global Programs Portfolio Portal during the investigation, planning and application processes.

Academic Requirements, Timelines, Policies and Deadlines

Students applying to study abroad must meet the college GPA minimum requirement of 2.2 for provider programs, including Tuscania. Some provider programs have GPA requirements higher than 2.2. They must have completed at least one full year to be considered for studying abroad; this means that at the earliest, students may apply during the spring semester of freshmen year to go abroad in the fall semester of sophomore year. While abroad, students must maintain a full-time status by taking a minimum of 12 credits.

The Office of International Programs vets hundreds of programs to create a portfolio to meet students' needs with as wide a selection as possible. Don't see the right program for you? Students may go through a petition process using the One-time Approval form. To learn about the One-time Approval Policy please review the Policy Document. Both the One-time Approval form and Policy Document can be obtained from the Office of International Programs.

All programs AND courses must be signed off by the OIP in order to have academic credits transferred to Saint Anselm.

Saint Anselm application deadlines are October 15 for Spring programs, March 15 for Fall and Summer programs. (Note: Provider programs may have different deadlines, so it’s important to be mindful throughout the planning process of this.)

Financial Aid application deadline is MARCH 15TH (one month earlier than deadline) for students who will study abroad. Eligibility for merit and need-based aid will eb assessed using the off-campus aiding policy. Thus, institutional aid will proportional to a student’s residential aid for the semester the student studies abroad. See the Study Abroad Finances Page for more information.

Advising Information

Students meet with the International Programs director and faculty advisor throughout the planning process. You will also meet with Financial Aid to review how aid packages and scholarships are adjusted for study abroad.

  • Advising Hours:  Appointments may be scheduled by emailing Jane Bjerklie-Barry, Director, at jbjerkliebarry@anselm.edu. In-person, telephone or zoom calls will be arranged.

Application Process

The application process is two-part: one application through the Study Abroad portal, and the second application through the program provider website directly. Once approved to study abroad, students will complete enrollment forms, the course approval process, and sign off on waivers for both the College and the provider. Please note that approval by Saint Anselm does not guarantee that students will be accepted by the program provider or host institution. Program providers will reach out to students directly to assist with their specific application requirements.  Students are responsible for any application fee of the provider or host institution; the Saint Anselm study abroad fee will be charged directly to student accounts.

Students approved for study abroad will be charged the designated Study Abroad Application fee ($900 for Tuscania and semester approved programs, $1750 for petitioned programs). Students will be charged directly by the program provider or host institution for room and board fees (if applicable). Saint Anselm College will pay host institution tuition on the student’s behalf.

Course Approvals and Course Credit

All courses in a global program must be pre-approved by academic advisors, department chairs or the Registrar. In order for credits to transfer, students must achieve a “C” or better. Typically courses will transfer back as 3-credits per course, with occasional exceptions depending on the type of course. It is important to note that grades do NOT transfer back, only credits.

The Office of International Programs has a growing list of previously approved core courses and subject courses from a wide array of programs and host universities. Contact our office to request the most updated list of pre-approved courses to help with the selection process.
