Managing Psychiatric Issues for Non Psych Nurses

December 5, 2025
8:00 am EST - 3:00 pm EST

This engaging and practical program is designed for nurses who do not specialize in psychiatric care but routinely encounter patients with mental health concerns. Participants will receive a comprehensive overview of common psychiatric diagnoses, frequently prescribed psychotropic medications, and evidence-based strategies for recognizing and managing behavioral issues in a variety of clinical settings. Emphasis will be placed on the integration of psychiatric and medical care, with real-world examples and interventions nurses can apply immediately to improve patient outcomes and enhance safety. The session will also focus on de-escalation techniques and communication strategies to support patients experiencing psychiatric distress.

Target Audience:

This program is intended for registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and advanced practice nurses working in non-psychiatric settings such as medical-surgical units, emergency departments, long-term care, school health, ambulatory care, and home health, who seek to enhance their knowledge and confidence in caring for patients with co-occurring psychiatric and medical needs.

Learning Outcome:

After participating in this activity, the learner will be able to identify common psychiatric conditions and apply appropriate interventions, including de-escalation techniques and medication considerations, to safely manage behavioral health issues in non-psychiatric clinical settings.

Easter Message from President Favazza

Dear Friends,

As we celebrate Easter, Paddy and I want to wish you and your loved ones a joyful and peaceful holiday. Easter reminds us of the power of hope, renewal, and new beginnings – a message that speaks deeply to who we are as a community rooted in faith and the Catholic and Benedictine tradition.

This season invites us to reflect, to reconnect with what matters most, and to support one another with compassion and grace. It also is a time to recommit to be a light for others and a force for empathy wherever in the world you make your home. Whether you’re here on the Hilltop or elsewhere, know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Happy Easter, and may the joy of the season be with you always.

Warmly,

Joseph A. Favazza, Ph.D.
President
