Effective communication is essential to the productive exchange of ideas through conversation, writing, or the media. Studying communication, rooted in the Humanities, you’ll strengthen your understanding of symbolic expression as well as the fundamentals of message-sending, and making meaning of the world around you. You’ll develop strong written, interpersonal, and critical thinking skills to deliver effective messages and engage with all types of people, media, and topics. Your knowledge and rich experiences will prepare you for a range of industries from education and publishing to broadcasting and journalism.

Special Topics - Podcasting

In this course, you’ll study the historical foundations for the emergence of podcasts. You’ll learn how the medium intersects with traditional broadcast media and digital discourse networks while focusing on the power of sonic storytelling. At the semester-end, you’ll produce your own podcast and implement techniques you observed in assigned listening and readings.

The Saint Anselm Crier

The Saint Anselm Crier is the College's independent student newspaper, published bi-weekly. The paper provides an outlet for students to share their perspectives within the Saint Anselm community. As a member of The Crier, you’ll ensure that information is unbiased and consistent with standard journalistic measure. The newspaper provides a forum for the free exchange of student ideas.

Topics You'll Study

Throughout your coursework, you’ll explore the role of communication to better understand how verbal and nonverbal symbols are used to shape the world. You’ll focus on the transmission of information and media literacy while studying a variety of topics including: 

  • How communication works between individuals, groups, organizations
  • How messages change (or don’t) across various media and via technology
  • The politics of representation
  • The way language helps us form community, identity, and a sense of the world
  • Rhetoric, media studies, public speaking, intercultural communication, and more
