Managing Psychiatric Issues for Non Psych Nurses

This engaging and practical program is designed for nurses who do not specialize in psychiatric care but routinely encounter patients with mental health concerns. Participants will receive a comprehensive overview of common psychiatric diagnoses, frequently prescribed psychotropic medications, and evidence-based strategies for recognizing and managing behavioral issues in a variety of clinical settings. Emphasis will be placed on the integration of psychiatric and medical care, with real-world examples and interventions nurses can apply immediately to improve patient outcomes and enhance safety. The session will also focus on de-escalation techniques and communication strategies to support patients experiencing psychiatric distress.
Target Audience:
This program is intended for registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and advanced practice nurses working in non-psychiatric settings such as medical-surgical units, emergency departments, long-term care, school health, ambulatory care, and home health, who seek to enhance their knowledge and confidence in caring for patients with co-occurring psychiatric and medical needs.
Learning Outcome:
After participating in this activity, the learner will be able to identify common psychiatric conditions and apply appropriate interventions, including de-escalation techniques and medication considerations, to safely manage behavioral health issues in non-psychiatric clinical settings.

Telephone Triage: Improving Your Skills and Documentation

Nurses are called upon to perform more and more functions, including triaging of a variety of different patient complaints. This session will provide you with the ability to: rapidly obtain a thorough symptom analysis and document those interactions effectively. Legal issues related to triaging will be discussed in detail. Participating in this session will extend your knowledge and confidence with triage in a variety of different practices and specialties.
Learning Outcome:
At the completion of this program, participants will be able to report an increase in knowledge about how to triage a variety of patient complaints, including ability to rapidly obtain a thorough symptom analysis and document those interactions effectively. Will also verbalize increase in knowledge of the legal issues as related to telephone triage
