Healthcare Simulation Educator Certificate

This is a four-part course. All four courses are required to earn the certificate. You do not have to sign up for all four courses at once. The four courses can be taken in any order.

DESCRIPTION: This innovative online certificate program is designed to explore the various components necessary to develop and run simulation scenarios within an academic or clinical setting.

WHO: Any nurse practicing in an education role who is interested in developing or working in a simulation program. This would be applicable to nurse educators in academia or healthcare facilities, preceptors, mentors, or staff nurses who are interested in learning more about this teaching pedagogy.

WHY: The content will provide the nuts and bolts of simulation to include how to assess educational needs, develop, implement and evaluate simulation experiences.

WHAT: In order to receive this 60-hour certificate (equal to 60 contact hours), completion of the four modules is required. Each module is 15 contact hours and is taught in an online format: 6 hours virtual live webinar, 9 hours online utilizing discussion boards and case studies, and required reading over the course of 4 weeks in an asynchronous manner.
 

Module 3: Desiging and Implementing Simulation Scenarios

Topics: nursing education simulation framework incorporating roles of facilitator and participant, educational practices, simulation outcomes and design characteristics.

Learning Outcome: Upon successful completion of this module, the participant will be able to discuss the important components of simulation design and important aspects to consider for simulation scenario implementation in both the hospital and academic settings

Agenda for Live Day:

  • Session 1: Components of the NLN/Jeffries Simulation Theory and the INACSL Standards for Best Practice: Simulation Design
  • Session 2: Fidelity in Simulation: The physical, conceptual, and psychological components of fidelity
  • Session 3: The constructs of participant, facilitator, and educational practices as they relate to simulation scenario design and implementation
  • 4 weeks of Readings and Discussion Board Posts and Responses on the Canvas LMS platform

Module 4: Trends in Healthcare and Use of Simulation to Impact Patient Outcomes

Topics: Topics include: evaluation instruments, current research and trends in outcomes, trends in simulation, utilization of resources.

Learning Outcome:  Upon successful completion of this module, the participant will be able to discuss the important components of simulation design and important aspects to consider for simulation scenario implementation in both the hospital and academic settings.

Agenda for Live Day

  • Session 1: Historical underpinnings and components of the NLN/Jeffries Simulation Theory and the INACSL Standards for Best Practice: Participant Assessment & Evaluation. (120 min)
  • Session 2: Valid and reliable tools used to measure outcomes of a simulation: Grundy’s Confidence Scale, Lasater Clinical Judgment Rubric, Satisfaction with Simulation Experience Scale, Satisfaction with Cultural Simulation Experience Scale, The Indiana Simulation Integration Rubric for Measuring IP Communication, The Modified Simulation Effectiveness Tool, & The Creighton Competency Evaluation Instrument (90 min)
  • Session 3: Development of a systematic evaluation plan for one’s simulation program while keeping in mind educational and patient care outcomes (patient safety/preventable harm, EBP bundles, EBP tools for measurement). Introduction of the PDSA Model for QI (90min)
  • Session 4: Trends in Simulation: Content included -Defining interprofessional education and discussion of the INACSL Standards of Best Practice: Simulation-Enhanced Interprofessional Education (Sim-IPE) and virtual simulation (vSim for Nursing™️ and Sentinel City™️).Health Policy and Legislative Issues (60 min)

Environmental Stewardship

The purpose of the Environmental Stewardship Committee is to provide leadership in enacting the Strategic Plan objective #23, reduce the environmental impact of the campus by implementing green initiatives throughout campus and incorporating sustainable design principles in all facility and building projects. The committee adheres to the core values of respect for the environment and sustainable living as a local and global environmental citizen and living the Benedictine value of stewardship for the environment and the earth. The membership of the committee includes representatives from faculty, staff and students and reports directly to the Executive Vice President.

Functions

Specific functions of the committee:

  1. Develop programs to raise awareness about environmental issues and encourage conservation and promotion of practices beneficial to the environment by all members of the Saint Anselm community. Serve as a conduit for information exchange about campus sustainability initiatives.
  2. Pursue external funding sources to advance the strategic directions for sustainability at the college.
  3. Make recommendations for procurement of products that contribute to sustainability and for strategic investments for recycling for the future.
  4. Make recommendations for sustainable design principles to be incorporated into all College and facility planning projects.
  5. Draft policy recommendations and provide accurate information to the President, President's Cabinet and College community in order to promote and ensure conservation of resources, energy efficiency, waste reduction and recycling, emissions reduction, reliance on renewable energy sources and resources, healthy and safe environmental practices, and the sustainable operation of the college, consistent with the college's mission and guiding principles.
