Archaeological Field School

For six weeks in May and June students dig in Roman bath complexes, and Etruscan shrines. The Department runs an excavation outside of  Orvieto, Italy at Coriglia.  This site date from 1000 BCE to 1400 CE and give material from Greek, Etruscan, Roman as well as medieval and renaissance Italian cultures. As part of this excavation, the Department runs a Field School.

Learning Opportunities

Majors and Minors are encouraged to participate to further enrich their engagement with and understanding of the ancient world. The credits granted for the field school program are Saint Anselm College credits.

In Memory of Ruth Conley ‘56

Alumna and longtime friend of Saint Anselm College, Ruth M. Conley ’56 passed away on September 19, 2023, at the age of 101. Born on May 15, 1922, she was a lifelong resident of Manchester, N.H.

Academic Program

The Major in Classics focuses on mastering the classical languages and thereby engaging ancient literary works directly.  The close attention given to Greek and Latin texts develops in the Classics major an ability to think critically, examine and weigh words carefully, and communicate effectively.  Our graduates often pursue advanced degrees in Classics, Ancient History or Archaeology, some go on to related fields in the liberal arts, or attend professional schools in law or medicine.

Major in Classical Archaeology

Seeks to put students in contact with the material cultures of Greece and Rome and peoples closely associated with them. Tools will be provided to reconstruct the ancient life-ways of these peoples as well as skill development in the interpretation of ancient social, political, and economic systems.
