Offered as a minor without licensure

Any student interested in better understanding and supporting the needs of individuals with disabilities can benefit from studying special education. As a Special Education minor, you’ll learn methods and strategies to best assist and instruct students with diverse sets of abilities. With in-depth courses and mentorship from experienced faculty, you will develop skills to design, implement, and utilize custom education plans that appropriately cater towards students’ varied needs. This area of study will prepare you for careers in a range of roles from paraprofessional and classroom aide to instructional designer and special education teacher.

Positive Behavior Supports

In this course, you’ll learn to develop positive, problem-solving approaches and strategies for classroom management. You’ll focus on behavioral supports and interventions that can be used in schools, classrooms, and one-on-one interactions. This class will also teach you about several types of challenging behaviors and how to best support them in educational settings through behavior change strategies.

Topics You’ll Study

Throughout your coursework, you’ll explore the role of special education to better understand how to assist and support individuals with disabilities. You’ll study a variety of topics, including:

Behavioral supports and interventions that create a positive learning environment in schools, classrooms, and individual students
Effective approaches and strategies to teaching and assessing students with disabilities
Special education law, inclusive education, individualized education programs, and differentiated instruction
The theory, current research, and debate around definition, diagnosis, etiology, and intervention strategies for autism spectrum disorders
